Episode 59

Maude, Josef and Yuri hide in the attic, whilst Avorn and Iago go downstairs to meet The Comtess of Carentan and her party, hoping to bluff their way out.

Avorn and Iago end up in separate rooms at the front of the house, where they are both questioned by Oscar Chilfroy, son of the Duke of Artois. They stick to their stories, and hold up well under questioning, but Avorn does get aggrevated by the infered accuastions. The Comtess, Chantalle Leleve, questions Jean-Louis Bechet, who is still in a confused state. Jean-Louis becomes agitated when the name Avorn is mentioned, but Chantalle calms him down, and waits her moment to ask a simple question.

"Where's the Halfling?" she asks. "In the attic", he replies.

The soldiers make for the first floor, and Jean-Louis shows them where the secret door is. Meanwhile, Maude puts Josef to sleep, and Yuri casts a spell, concealing the three huddled in a corner of the attic.

Soldiers, Oscar and Chantalle enter the attic, and search it. They see nothing. Oscar goes back down into the house, leaving Chantalle and two soldiers in the room.

Maude's attempt to keep Josef subdued goes wrong, leaving her arm twisted in a painful position, but the group remain silent. Chantalle, though, still stands in the attic, moving from place to place, listening carefully. Soon, she is but a few feet away from the hiding place, and realises she can hear breathing.

The game is up, and the spell is broken. Josef throws his open bag of stardust up into the air. Chantalle and the two soldiers are blinded for a moment. Josef rolls between Chantalle's legs, slicing her skirt to aid his way through, and is quickly down to the first floor. He dodges past a Knight on, and makes for the landing window and the front of the house, breaks through it, and jumps down to the ground.

A Knight and five soldiers chase after Josef and he scurries away into the night.

In the attic, Chantalle and the two soldiers are shaking off the white powder, and spluttering. Yuri suddenly stands up, points his pistol at Chantalle, and orders the two soldiers to back off. Chantalle indicates that they should. Yuri then passionately outlines what the party is doing in Bretonnia, the perils that they have faced, and the danger that Bretonnia could be in. Yuri's frustrations at the delays in catching up with Nancy Bechet, and his belief in the cause he his fighting for pour out. He then kneels in front of Chantalle, and presents his pistol to her.

At the back of the attic, everyone not out chasing Josef gathers, most having heard at least some of Yuri's speech. The nearest soldiers to Yuri and Maude glance over at Oscar Chilfroy, who indicates they should hold off for a moment.

Chantalle and Yuri are having a quiet converstion in the corner, that the rest of the room cannot hear. She tells him that Josef may now well face death without a trial when he is caught, but that he and Maude must return to Castle Artois to face a trial. And possible death.

Avorn and Iago, meanwhile, remonstrate with Oscar Chilfroy. Avorn asks, of the fateful night in Carentan, "Who struck the first blow?". Thinking back, Chantalle remembers that it was her husbands Knights that attacked first, but she says nothing. Chantalle and Yuri stare at each other, lost for a moment in each others gaze. Eventually, Chantalle murmours to Yuri "I believe you, but I cannot let you go. You lost your chance in Carentan." She turns, and leaves the attic.

Oscar takes over. He tells Iago and Avorn that they are free to leave if they wish, or, they can travel to Castle Artois, and present a defence of Yuri and Maude to the Duke of Artois. Iago and Avorn agree to travel with them. Everyone descends to the first floor, Oscar Chilfroy escorting Yuri and Maude.

Chantalle Leleve is standing at the partly broken window at the front of the landing, looking out on the moonslit wood beyond. She turns and watches as the prisoners are escorted down the stairs to the hall, meeting Yuri's glance as he looks up at her.
