Episode 81
Luger Retter reveals that, as well as several groups of Witch Hunters searching for the party, Iago is being persued up the Talabec by a noble called Markus Jägereiche. Something about Iago having killed his brother in defence of a peasant girl. Iago rolls his eyes, and doesn't particularly elaborate further.

Belongings are moved over to Retter's boat. Orpheus unties Axel and Felix, and explains that Luger has rescued them from the Dwarf and The Foreigner, who have both 'run off into the woods'. Axel and Felix buy this story, and plan to head back down to Ravenstein. Luger's boat, Das grüne Schongebiet, is well maintained, with cosy cabins. There's a young black cat, whom Luger calls Meckins. Maude is convinced that this is the real Meckins, returning to his former owners, but sees no actual evidence of this, despite offering the cat fish on several occasions.

Luger says Johann Esmer is being held in the Schloss Hohenwerfen. The castle is somewhere to the north east of Wolfenburg, which itself is north east of Talabheim. Orpheus explains to Luger about Gunther Weiss, how he stole The Brass Skull, and the pressing matter of stopping Weiss reuniting The Skull with a companion artifact, thought to be a dagger. Esmer is believed to know where the dagger is, it's just a matter of somehow asking him.

The boat is sailed east through the night, through the next day, overnight again, arriving at the docks outside of Talabheim late on the second day. Talabheim city itself lies inside a vast crater formed centuries ago on the eastern bank, its battlements and impressive western gate towering above the run-down docks.

The Lucky Lady, the boat with the other Daemon Tooth Compass on-board, hasn't been seen again. Maude has kept a close watch on the compass in her possession, which has continued to point east, along the river.

Luger finds a space to tie up. Orpheus and Fingling disembark, and walk up the crowded docks, past a group of arguing Kislevian Stevedores, looking out for The Lucky Lady and her crew. Instead, Orpheus sees an Elf he recognises, getting on-board the boat in front. It is Amber Grislane. Orpheus and Fingling catch up with him, and Amber invites them on-board.

Amber travels with three other Elves and Gregor D'etoiles. The boy. Gunther's son, assumed hidden away somewhere in the north of The Empire. Amber explains that the monastery north of Carroburg that had been their original destination had recently been attacked by a band of Beastmen. They are headed instead for a Sigmarian outpost in the Farlic Hills. Gregor looks bored and cold.

The compass has been pointing at Gregor. Orpheus quickly explains to Amber about the other boat and its crew, who are most likely hunting Gregor. Fingling and Luger walk to the end of the dock, noting the Lucky Lady tied up near the end. They report back. A plan is formulated, with the boy as the bait.

The Elves cast off, as does Luger, and the two boats head east for an hour, before finding a sheltered spot on the north bank to tie up and wait. About four hours later, an unlit barge sails slowly toward the Elven boat, two men on deck keeping watch in the moonslight. Satisfied they have found their quarry, they sail to the bank and tie up.

Four men creep along the riverbank, and are about to board the boat when they are ambushed. Maude weaves her magic, Iago and Orpheus fire a bow and a pistol. Fingling wades in with his axe. The Elves appear from the boat and kill the leader, believed to be called Siggy.

Three men are killed, and one knocked out cold. He is tied up for questioning...
