Orpheus' dream of the castle high in the mountains continues. In the valley below, a village is under attack. A Beastman kills a woman. Burial will be needed there.

Time passes, and Orpheus dreams again, of a man lying on the floor of a darkened room. Orpheus' sense is that the man is local, but that the castle and the village are off to the east somewhere.

The next morning, he has a shock. The carts that have been out from the temple of Morr and collected the night's dead. Hans lies dead on one of the carts, a grievous wound to his stomach. Orpheus questions an initiate, who tells him that it was the city watch who sent word of this body, and that it was collected from an inn called The Roasted Rat.

Orpheus returns to The Boar's Rest, and informs Maude and Iago about the death of Hans.

A dwarf arrives. Tattoos on his arms, and a red beard, he's an old friend of Looselips, and demands a gut-buster breakfast and some Bugman's ale to wash it down with. He's called Fingling Deepdelve, and claims to have been in Lustria, and to have been robbed of the gold he acquired there by an Estalian pirate in a ship called 'Santa Diablo'. He asks Iago about the ship in perfect Estalian. Iago never really answers his question.

Orpheus returns to the Temple Of Morr, and tells the priests that all of Hans' friends have left the city. Orpheus pays to keep Hans out of a paupers grave.

Fingling, kicking back with his old chum Looselips, noshing on a large fry-up, tells his tale of Lustria. A dwarf called Morgrim betrayed him, Fingling reckons. Looselips calls Mina down, who confirms to Fingling that she saw Morgrim in Altdorf ten days ago. He pretended not to see her, and hurried away. Fingling plans to visit Morgrim's family in Talabheim, and ask a few pointed questions.

Listen - Over breakfast in The Boar's Rest, Fingling tells Looselips about the trip to Lustria.

Contains strong language.

Orpheus visits The Roasted Rat, where he intimidates Bernt, the innkeep. He recovers Hans' prayer book, sword and musket. He makes it quite clear to poor, trembling Bernt, that his interest in this matter is representing the local temple of Morr, and that Bernt must not mention this to anyone. Bernt gives clear indication that it was Mathis Wundegesicht that killed Hans.

Listen - Orpheus intimidates Bernt.

Back at The Boar's Rest, Orpheus, Maude and Iago discuss how best to find out the whereabouts of Johann Esmer. Maude decides she'll try and speak to Henlym Jutzenbacher, a grey wizard that Josef knew, and that Maude met last time she was in Altdorf.

Maude, who has been shopping for clothes, tries to persuade Iago and Orpheus of the benefits of the new look she's picked out for them. Orpheus is not sure. Iago has his hair cut. Maude is very frightened that, having killed Hans, Mathis Wundegesicht will try and kill all his associates. She's got herself a job as a barmaid for a few nights, and intends to look, as much as possible, like a normal, slightly run down, Altdorf woman.

In the early evening, Maude goes off to work at The Feet Up Canary. Fingling, who seems to have been drinking all day, visits a few dwarven haunts before joining Maude for a couple. Fingling gets a bit of abuse, and knocks his heckler out cold. Some of the watchmen in the tavern drag the drunken agitator out into the street.

Iago and Orpheus stake out Wundgesicht's house in Reikstrasse. Skulking at the end of the street, they spot him as he goes past them, and into his house. Lamps are lit on the top floor. They decide not to take him on alone.

Next morning, Maude meets with Jutzenbacher, who leads her into a different town house from last time. In the basement kitchen, Jutzenbacher explains that he is aware that Esmer has vanished from Marienburg, and that the assumption is that he is being held at a safe house somewhere in The Empire. He knows there are around half a dozen such places, and knows their rough locations. But cannot be more specific than that.
