Erchenbald Zhufgruber was the youngest ever Master Wizard in the history of The Grey Order. His natural talent was spotted when he was just 14 by his mentor, Volker Gaffiwig, and thereafter Zhufgruber's life was steeped in the worlds of Shadowmancy. In his thirties, Erchenbald spent more and more time away from Altdorf, on a variety of spying missions. It was rumoured that he did not get on with the Magister Patriarch of the order, Reiner Starke, although Erchenbald always strongly denied this. He had a habit of hiring the un-likeliest people to undertake spying missions for him, and was fascinated by the more obscure disciplines of magic. Maude Horsdevil was taught by and worked with Erchenbald for about eighteen months. Erchenbald was with Maude in Middenheim, trying to infiltrate The Jade Sceptre cult, when he was killed in an explosion. Gunther Weiss tried to rescue him from under the rubble, but the fires were too hot.
