A Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment, Basil Carter found himself in grand company when Lord Pengellon summoned him to Fairlie Place in June 1870.

Pengellon mentioned to Colonel Balfour that he was looking for "...a solid chap, thinks on his feet, a decent shot of course, and a good swordsman, naturally. Mustn't be too much of a looker, Balfour, my daughter has a habit of falling for anything in a uniform, and if he's below her station she's often all the more interested. Oh, and if he's got a basic command of French, so much the better."

Isabel is a Galvanist, a keen proponent of the primitive technology dubbed 'electricity'. She is rarely seen without her assortment of wooden boxes, or her crossbow. Many of the peculiar items in her boxes are entwined with copper wire. Her delicate perfumes are often unable to mask the feint aroma of ozone.

Isabel's parents were killed in a carriage accident, quite possibly at the hand of the fiendish Duke Marmalade, who is the primary physician to the Royal Society of Physicians. Isabel hasn't caught up with him yet.

Pengellon invited her along on his European Expedition because he was keen to meet her, and to see for himself how electricity works.

Charles is the son of Lord Horatio Bellmont, and is the result of an affair his father had with a woman from the Lower Orders.  Consequently, Charles never had an easy relationship with Lady Hilda, nor with his assorted brothers and sisters. He never knew his real mother, who, he is told, is now dead.

Charles is 27, and still isn't sure what he wants to do with life. He's spent the last few years flitting between the family estate and rooms in London. Horatio Bellmont has bent Lindsay Pengellon's ear on the subject of Charles many times in their club, which is perhaps why Pengellon asked Charles to accompany him on the trip to Paris.

Nineteen year old Gwendolyn lives with her Grand-mama in Preston, a small village north of Brighton. She attended the same school as Emily Pengellon in Hove, and the two became firm friends.

Gwendolyn's father, Cecil, Earl of Carlton, remains on Empire business in India. Gwen lived in India until her teens. Adelaide Barclay, Gwen's Grand-mama, was most insistent with Cecil that "the Raj is not a place for an impressionable young girl", and so Gwen was shipped back to Sussex.

She's a very good shot, having hunted on the estate in Rajastan with Ranjeet, Cecil's local fixer and right hand man. Gwendolyn's mother died giving birth to her. Her older brother, Arthur, is in the army.

Played by Teresa.

Lord Rocher is a former British Ambassador to Prussia. He spent ten years representing The Queen in Berlin, and came to know Bismarck quite well.

Rocher has known Lindsay Pengellon for many years, and is a firm friend and ally. Together, he and Lindsay were behind the explosion in Buckley Street, Wigan, which sabotaged a rocket being built by the inventor Wilberforce Boston.

Now in his forties, he has retired to the quieter climes of The House of Lords. When he's not on holiday. Or travelling with Lindsay. Or both.

Played by Matt.
